3 Day Devotional: A Call to Benevolence: Worship, Not Waste - Day 1

Day 1: Benevolence as Worship

Day 1 — Benevolence as Worship

Scripture: Matthew 26:7, 10 (NIV)
7 A woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on
his head as he was reclining at the table.
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a
beautiful thing to me.”

Reflection:
In Bethany, a woman approached Jesus not with words but with worship. She broke open what was precious to her and poured it out on the One she deemed worthy. She didn’t give out of surplus — she gave out of love.

That’s the essence of benevolence — a heart that shows goodwill and generosity toward others, especially when it flows from love for God. Benevolence isn’t just kindness; it’s compassion in action. It’s giving not because we have to, but because we want to — because worship has softened our hearts and opened our hands.

True benevolence begins not with wealth but with worship. It’s not about how much we have to give, but how deeply we recognize the worth of the One we’re giving to. When we see Jesus as worthy, generosity becomes an act of devotion rather than obligation.

Personal Reflection Questions:
1. What “perfume” do I hold that could be poured out in worship — my time, my talents, or
my resources?
2. Do I see my giving as duty or as devotion?
3. What would change if I gave not to impress others but to honor Jesus?

Prayer:
Lord, help me to see that benevolence is not about the size of my gift but the sincerity of my
heart. Teach me to give like the woman in Bethany — freely, joyfully, and with love that sees
You as worthy of it all. Amen.
